county seat of Mitchell County. It has become a

Bakersville NC and the surrounding area is generally

Rhododendron Festival (the second oldest festival in
the state) when each June the world's largest
natural rhododendron gardens, atop The Roan, are

The Avery-Mitchell-Yancey regional library is
located in the downtown area.
Area Educational Information
Gouge Primary School and Bowman Middle School are
located within the city of Bakersville. Mitchell
High School is 5 miles South of Bakersville and
Mayland Community College is located in Spruce Pine
(10 miles South) with plans to have a satellite
campus in Bakersville. Appalachian State University
(ASU), (ASU has 45 distinct graduate programs at the
master's, specialist, and doctoral levels), and East
Tennessee State University (ETSU) , including 14
different master's degrees, the specialist degree (EdS),
and six doctoral degrees. Students pursuing the MD
degree and residency programs at ETSU's James H.
Quillen College of Medicine are within an hours
drive from Bakersville.
Health Services
Bakersville has excellent health services. The
Bakersville Community Medical Clinic is located in
downtown Bakersville. It has a team of five, board
certified physicians, a chiropractor, a
psychologist, a midwife, and a physician's
assistant. It is affiliated with nearby Spruce Pine
Community Hospital and Mission St. Joseph Hospital
in Asheville. Two dental practices and a modern,
full service pharmacy are also located in town.
Shopping and Additional Information
The major shopping centers of Asheville, Boone, and
Johnson City, Tennessee are within an hour's drive.
Skiing, horseback riding, white-water rafting,
fishing, and golf are just a few of the favorite
year-round activities that are available. The Blue
Ridge Parkway, Mt. Mitchell (the highest peak east
of the Rockies), Grandfather Mountain, and The Roan
are a few of the attractions that make Bakersville

popular vacation and home location.
Asheville Regional Airport and Tri-cities airport
are an hour away. Interstates 40 and 26 are 30 miles
from Bakersville NC.
Climate second to none
The climate in Bakersville is ideal with cool
summers that make air conditioning unnecessary. Mild
winters are the rule. Temperatures rarely rise above
85 degrees in the Summer or below 20 degrees in the
winter. A Spectacular leaf season in the fall are
